Medical waste has a strong risk of space infection, acute infection and latent infection. It has become  internationally recognized hazardous waste. The safe disposal methods of medical waste mainly include incineration method and non-incineration method (including high temperature steam sterilization, microwave sterilization, chemical sterilization)

High-temperature steam sterilization treatment technology has become a widely used technology in countries around the world


We will take a city’s medical waste centralized disposal center (3~4t/d disposal capacity) as an example to introduce the process design, including the process flow and treatment of  hazardous substances , discuss the design technology of medical waste high-temperature steam treatment system.


The technology of high-temperature steam sterilization system


The medical waste high-temperature steam treatment process has three process forms: steam treatment before shredding, shredding before steam treatment, or simultaneous steam treatment and shredding.


The basic principle of the high-temperature sterilization treatment process of medical waste is to use high temperature (121 ~ 134 ℃) steam to heat the medical waste , use the high penetration of steam and release latent heat to make the protein containing pathogenic microorganisms lose activity. The technological process is as follows:  load the medical waste in a closed pressure vessel, vacuum pump start to exhaust the cold air, then the steam enters in to heat up and keep  a certain temperature and time to kill the germs in the medical waste. The air will be treated by high efficiency filter and high efficiency adsorber before discharge

Overall process design of high temperature steam system

Storage system

Transport the turnover box containing medical waste to the refrigerated storage and refrigerate below 5 ℃, the storage time does not exceed 72h. The wall 1m away from the ground should be  anti-seepage treatment, and the ground has good drainage performance. In order to avoid the leakage of odor, the storage is fully enclosed and designed with negative pressure. The  ultraviolet sterilization lamp is installed on the upper part for disinfection of the air in the storage.


Feeding system

The lifter is used to lift and pour the weighed medical waste into the sterilization cart to avoid the contact between the operator and the medical waste.


High-temperature steam sterilization disposal system

High-temperature sterilization disposal system consists of steam sterilizer, rotary platform, rails, boiler, air compressor and other auxiliary products.

The pulse vacuum sterilizer is the core of medical waste disposal system. It has two parts, hardware and software. Hardware includes pressure vessel, steam pipes, jacket, air disposal system, control panel and others. The software adopts advanced PLC control system to complete whole process automatically. It includes: vacuum, heat up, discharge, drying and other parameter.

Shredding system

The shredding system mainly includes: unloader and shredder

  1. The unloader is used to lift and dump the medical waste into the shredder whichavoid the operator’s contact with medical waste
  2. The crusher is used to effectively destroy the sterilized medical waste and reduce its volume.


Exhaust gas treatment system

The exhaust gas treatment system consists of high-efficiency filters and high-efficiency adsorbers. The high-efficiency filter (0.2μm) ensures that all bacteria or spores are retained and the retention efficiency is above 99.99%. A high-efficiency adsorber (activated carbon) completes the adsorption of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in non-condensable gases, making the exhaust gas completely harmless.


High-temperature steam supply system

Steam supply system consists of boiler and waster softner.  Boiler generates the high temperature steam for the sterilizer; Water softner provides soft water for the boiler.
